The native has not pampered his taste buds in Colombo more than over the last couple of years.

We have seen numerous restaurants and cafes sprouting and then some withering even faster. But luckily there have been a few that have survived the storm of competition to come out as favorites.

We should first attempt to segment the restaurants by genre.

1. Chinese - Emperors Wok, Long Feng, Chinatown
2. North Indian - Mango Tree, Navaratne
3. Vegetarian - Shanmugas, Mathura, Vani Villas
4. Thai - Siam House, Royal Thai
5. Sri Lankan - Curry Leaf, Nuga Gama
6. Fusion - Tao

The above do not cover the complete spectrum of specialty restaurants available to the gastronome but only a starting point for a journey that will very literally never end, as numerous new places keep opening their doors.

A traveler to Colombo should also be aware that the five star hotels regularly have food promotions such as Indonesian, Thai, Indian, Mongolian etc These offer more authentic tasting food as ingredients and chefs are flown in for the food festival.

Also the tourist board i.e. the Government also organizes "Hawker Street" food extravaganzas which are usually once a year close to the main park in Colombo - Vihara Maha Devi Park, should not be skipped as it could very well be the highlight of your visit to Colombo.

Don't be afraid to experiment all the restaurants in five star hotels are very hygienic as well as most of the popular restaurants have certificates issued by the authorities. If in doubt ask to see the certificate issued - as this should be displayed prominently.

If you are too tired or lazy to dine in, take away and delivery facilities are available from most popular restaurants.

Further, many delivery only businesses are also featured in Colombo such as "Roomservice" "Hot wheels"
