Ayubowan! - Sri Lanka guide was created to help the traveler to appreciate the breathtaking beauty of this sunny paradise in the Indian Ocean. We hope that you will be able to better plan and execute your visit to Sri Lanka by using the tips and insights provided in this website.
Ptolemy named this island as Taprobane in his world map, The Arabs called it ‘Serendib’ from which later the word serendipity was derived, the Dutch called it Sailan, the English called it Ceylon and today it is known as Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka has a long and splendid recorded history of more than 2500 years this is a record in itself! - It started with the arrival of Prince Vijaya of India to Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is one of the most wonderful places in the world and legend has it that when Adam was sent down to earth God chose Sri Lanka because it resembled a paradise on Earth.
Sri Lanka is a one stop shop for tourists as it boasts of a diverse range of flora and fauna - many endemic to this magnificent island. The Elephants, leopards, birds, butterflies and various species of insects are the main draws for nature lovers. Special eco-tourism resorts have been built that allow visitors to closely appreciate nature while trekking through the wild. Also varied and colorful plants can be seen at the numerous botanical gardens in Sri Lanka especially at Hakgala and Peradeniya.
The central hills with its scenic tea gardens, the wild elephants of Minneriya, the leopards of Yala, the whales off Trincomalee, Dolphins near Negombo beaches, Dutch fort of Galle, ancient ruins and giant water tanks, golden beaches of Beruwala, trekking through virgin forests of Sinharaja, pampered at boutique hotels and Ayurvedic medicinal expertise make this splendid isle the best place for pleasure seekers.
It is truly unbelievable that such a small island can have all these attractions. The ending of the 30 year war has resulted in a huge influx of tourists from all over the world resulting in the setting of new hotels and also the refurbishment and expansion of existing hotels.
If you miss the hustle and bustle of the city or want to do some quick shopping Colombo is panacea for you. Branded and designer clothes of all shapes and sized are available at jaw-dropping low prices – many tourists used the air cargo facility provided by SriLankan airlines to ship goods back home as the airline passenger allowance is woefully inadequate after a bout of binge shopping.
Sri Lankan hotels are world class with all modern amenities and have the best all you can eat buffets for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The communication facilities are cheap and the best in South Asia boasting 3G, WIFI, WIMAX, ADSL and all other communication channels. Sri Lanka’s key selling point is its high literacy rate and friendly people whose warmth and hospitality is of legend.
We welcome you to our wonderful isle of serendipity.
